Why intent changes what “winning” looks like
A lot of AI search advice gets messy because it talks about “visibility” as if every prompt asks the engine to do the same job.

Articles are the leading cited format for informational prompts at 45.48%. Listicles, on the other hand, dominate commercial prompts at 40.86%. That maps well to how marketers should think about TOFU and BOFU work.
For TOFU prompts, citation is often enough.
If the engine is explaining a concept, being one of the trusted sources inside that explanation is a solid win. You are helping shape the answer, even if the user never clicks.
For BOFU prompts, citation alone is not the whole prize.
The bigger win is being one of the named options inside the answer.
BrightEdge found that prompt patterns like “budget,” “best,” “deals,” “buy,” and “compare” trigger far denser brand mentions than generic prompts. In other words, commercial language pushes the engine toward option sorting, not just explanation.
So yes, you still want citations at TOFU.
But at BOFU, the job shifts.
You are not only trying to be sourced.
You are trying to be selected.
What the data actually says
Exact-query rank overlap is partial, not complete
This is the stat that should have ended a lot of lazy AI visibility reporting.
Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs (full study). It found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared within the first 10 SERP blocks for the same query. Another 31.2% appeared in positions 11 to 100, and 31.0% came from beyond the top 100 blocks.
That does not mean rank stopped mattering.
It means same-query page-one rank is no longer a complete explanation for why a source gets cited.
Ahrefs’ own interpretation is that Google is pulling more of its sources from fan-out query SERPs and adjacent result spaces, not just from the original query’s main results. Google’s documentation on query fan-out makes that interpretation pretty hard to dismiss.
Citation cores are concentrated and sticky
AI systems are not sampling the web evenly.
They keep returning to a relatively small set of trusted sources.

Visibility inside the answer matters because clicks drop
Pew’s March 2025 dataset found that 18% of Google searches in its sample produced an AI summary (Pew dataset). When users encountered an AI summary, they clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when no AI summary appeared. Clicking a cited link inside the summary happened in just 1% of visits. Pew also found that 88% of those summaries cited three or more sources.

Ahrefs found that among AI Overview cited pages that did not rank in Google’s top 100 for the same keyword, 18.2% were YouTube URLs. Across the full dataset, YouTube accounted for 5.6% of all cited AI Overview URLs.
They have clean entity signals
The product is easy to classify.
The positioning is stable.
The same core story appears across pages and platforms.
That makes it easier for a model to treat the brand as a reliable recommendation object instead of a messy pile of marketing claims.
They benefit from corroboration
Pew’s multi-source data and BrightEdge’s concentration data point in the same direction: repeated, consistent appearance across trusted sources makes an answer easier to support.
That is why “mentions” matter even when there is no link. If you are not already tracking them, start with a proper brand mentions guide or a more active brand monitoring workflow.
A link is great.

They match the engine’s habits

For example, Google AI Overviews leaned heavily on YouTube within the social/community slice, while ChatGPT leaned much more heavily toward retailer and marketplace domains.
So there is no single “AI rank.”

Why rank tracking alone is an incomplete KPI
Rank tracking still has value.
It tells you whether a page is in contention for the literal query.
But by itself, it misses too much of the process that now matters.
The biggest issue is that rank is a page-level metric, while AI recommendations are evidence-set outputs.
That gap is why teams can show strong organic positions and still lose brand visibility inside AI answers.
It is also why attribution keeps getting uglier. Google says traffic from AI features is folded into the overall Web search type in Search Console, not broken out as a separate AI report. Make your pages eligible first

In Wix’s professional services sample, those third-party listicles accounted for 80.9% of citations.
If you sell software, getting included in the right external comparisons is usually more valuable than writing one more flattering roundup about yourself.
Expand your video footprint
YouTube is not a side channel anymore.
Ahrefs found it made up 18.2% of non-ranking AI Overview citations and 5.6% of all cited AI Overview URLs overall. BrightEdge’s eCommerce work also found Google AI Overview leaned heavily on YouTube within social/community citations.
