How KEY ESG Went From Near Zero to #1 for ESG Reporting Software
KEY ESG is enterprise sustainability management software. Working with MADX, it grew organic traffic from 65 to a peak of 5,464 monthly visits (an 84x increase) and now ranks #1 in Google for its core category terms, with 67 citations across AI search.

KEY ESG is now the brand Google shows first for its category. When a sustainability lead searches for esg reporting software, esg software or esg compliance, KEY ESG holds the #1 position. That visibility sits on top of an organic channel MADX grew from 65 monthly visits in January 2023 to a peak of 5,464 in February 2026, an 84x increase. Here is how the work compounded.
Client Background
KEY ESG is enterprise sustainability management software. The London-based platform helps in-house sustainability teams and private equity firms collect ESG data, comply with frameworks like CSRD, SFDR, IFRS and the EU Taxonomy, run Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon accounting, and turn the results into audit-ready reports. It serves customers including A.P. Moller Capital, Pollen Street Capital, Wittur and Iconic London, with more than 10,000 monthly active users on the platform.
KEY ESG had a strong product and a crowded, technical category to win. ESG software buyers research through Google and, increasingly, through AI assistants before they ever book a demo. The job was to make KEY ESG the answer those searches return, in a market full of established competitors with deeper link equity.
The Challenges
Three things stood between KEY ESG and durable organic demand.
A young domain with thin authority. In early 2023 the site pulled fewer than 100 organic visits a month, held almost no top-three rankings, and carried a Domain Rating in the high teens. It did not yet have the off-page trust signals to compete for commercial category terms.
A fragmented, high-intent category. ESG and sustainability search splits across regulations, frameworks, carbon accounting and software comparisons, each with its own intent. Without a structured content map, the pages that convert stayed buried.
Incumbent competition on the money terms. Terms like esg reporting software and corporate sustainability software were held by older, higher-authority domains. Closing that gap needed both relevant content and real authority pointed at the right pages.
Our Approach
MADX ran three workstreams in parallel: category-mapped content, technical foundations, and authority building aimed at commercial pages.
1. Category-mapped content
We built SEO content around how ESG buyers actually search: framework and regulation explainers, carbon accounting guides, and honest software comparison pages mapped to bottom-of-funnel intent. Each hub reinforced KEY ESG's authority on a specific theme and linked to the product pages that convert.
2. Technical SEO foundations
We tightened the technical SEO base so the new content could rank: clean site structure, internal linking that funnelled authority to priority pages, and healthy crawlability across the growing library. This is the standard MADX applies across B2B SaaS SEO programmes.
3. Authority building on commercial pages
We ran steady, quality-led link building, pointing relevant editorial links at category and comparison pages rather than the blog alone. Referring domains climbed from 17 to 1,353, and Domain Rating rose from 17 to 52, which is what turned page-two content into page-one rankings on the money terms.
The Results
The programme compounded. Every figure below is pulled from Ahrefs Site Explorer (worldwide) and Google Search Console, with the window stated for each metric.
Traffic: 65 to a peak of 5,464 a month
Monthly organic traffic grew from 65 in January 2023 to a peak of 5,464 in February 2026, an 84x increase, and has held in the 4,500 to 5,200 band through 2026. The estimated value of that traffic rose from about $180 to roughly $21,500 per month, because the new rankings landed on commercial terms, not just informational ones.
Category ownership: #1 on the terms that convert
KEY ESG now holds the top Google position for the core commercial terms in its category, and page two for none that matter. These are the queries a buyer runs while building a shortlist.

Rankings: top-3 up from 0 to a peak of 310
Top-three keywords grew from 0 in early 2023 to a peak of 310, and page-one keywords passed 500 over the same period. The rankings landed on high-intent category and comparison terms, which is why traffic value grew faster than raw traffic.
Search visibility in Google Search Console
First-party Google data tells the same story. Impressions climbed from about 99,000 in March 2025 to a peak of 1.3 million per month in January 2026, and average position improved from 30.6 to under 13, moving KEY ESG from page three to the top of page two and into page one on its priority queries.
Where KEY ESG Shows Up in AI Search
AI search rewards the same authority that earns page-one rankings. KEY ESG is now cited 67 times across six AI platforms: Perplexity (26), Google AI Mode (19), Gemini (9), Google AI Overviews (7), ChatGPT (5) and Grok (1). Those citations land on the framework, carbon accounting and comparison pages the SEO programme built, so AI visibility came as a byproduct of the core work through GEO and AI search, not a separate project.
Key Takeaways and Lessons
1. Own the category terms, not just the long tail
KEY ESG's growth came from ranking #1 on esg reporting software, esg software and esg compliance, the terms buyers use to build a shortlist. Commercial rankings, not vanity traffic, are what moved the channel.
2. Authority is the unlock for a young domain
Content alone was not enough against incumbents. Growing referring domains from 17 to 1,353 and Domain Rating from 17 to 52 is what let the content rank for competitive money terms.
3. Strong SEO now carries into AI search
The pages that earned Google rankings are the same ones AI engines cite. KEY ESG's 67 AI citations were a byproduct of the authority work, not a separate programme.
